A visit to Lanzerac

Lanzerac Hotel, Stellenbosch
I was offered the opportunity to visit the 5 star Lanzerac Hotel in Stellenbosch and enjoy a one night stay. As you can imagine, I jumped at the chance and so last weekend my partner and I set off into the Cape Winelands to explore this 300 year old private working wine estate.

Lanzerac is a beautiful historical estate surrounded by vineyards and Oak trees with amazing views of the Helderberg mountains. If you love heritage and old world charm then you’ll be in heaven here.

The estate is under new ownership and is currently under going a huge revamp which is being done in various phases so that guests have minimal disruption. We got to stay in one of their brand new refurbished rooms and wow, it was absolutely stunning. Our room was spacious and yet cosy at the same time with a lovely classic feel.

The spacious bathroom was the real highlight with it’s free standing bath tub, overlooking a private courtyard and water feature. Sigh… and how beautiful is the botanical wallpaper?

The hotel has forty eight en-suite rooms that each have their own private patio, overlooking gardens, vineyards and the majestic mountains. This is a real plus point for me. The hotel also has a number of swimming pools, lush lawns and plenty of garden nooks that guests can escape to.

We enjoyed a delicious breakfast outside in their courtyard. Lanzerac has a number of dining options available from picnics under the Oaks, to relaxed meals on their terrace to a more formal ambiance in the Governors Hall Restaurant. For after dinner drinks, you can escape to the Esquire Whiskey & Cigar Bar.

Of course one needs to visit The Wine Tasting Room and Deli too! We had a fantastic tour of the cellar with winemaker, Wynand Lategan and did their Wine and Chocolate pairing. I discovered that the world’s first commercially produced Pinotage was created at Lanzerac, what an accomplishment! Although their chardonnay was still the winner for me.

If you’re looking for a luxurious winelands getaway and fabulous hospitality then be sure to consider Lanzerac. Go on, treat yourself!

    Re Lanzerac

Hope the Spa is getting a major revamp: our last stay was amazing; just a pity that the dressing facilities and general rating of the spa did not match up to the ret of the hotel’s luxury rating, (in my humble opinion anyway)

Yes, the spa is getting a major revamp next year which will apparently take a few months. I took a peak at the spa and agree with you, it is definitely looking a bit dated. I’m looking forward to seeing the new improved look!

That bath is just dreamy, would be great to spend an hour (or 2!) in there with a glass of wine and a good book 🙂

Just to clarify that the Lanzerac Hotel & Spa was sold in 2012 and now being operated under new management. The new owners are very hands on and there have been some wonderful tangible changes to the property already. Our new ownership have embarked on a large scale capital expenditure, which will be rolled out in a series of stages over the next couple of years. 2016 marks the full over-haul and renovation of the Spa

I had the privilege of been taken on a “peep-view” tour of the rooms’ renovation-in-progress today. We have been building for 34 years, and I’ve never came across decor, intuition and taste that hits so deep and causes so much calmness, with ancient old and ultra mod joined in perfect harmony! My jaw literary dropped, and I almost lost my “tour-guide”. Stunning, breathtaking, and my only choice for our next anniversary evening!

I had the privilege of escorting a small women-only golf group to South Africa last October. We had 3 unforgettable nights at Lanzerac.. it was a highlight for these Aussie ladies I can tell you.. the rooms we had were very comfy, spacious – the cherry was a delivery of lovely Lanzerac wine and a dessert plate one evening.. aah, that peppermint crisp tart! Every meal we had there was fabulous.. the staff are very caring and attentive.. I will have no doubt to choose Lanzerac next time round.. ps.. its well placed for the Wine Estates plus the different golf courses.. aah Lanzerac.. you beaut! Thanks for this great update.. we’ll be back!
