My parents first introduced us to Spookfontein wine estate as they live in Hermanus and love discovering local gems. Ever since then we’ve been big fans of Spookfontein’s organic red wines and always have a few stocked up in our pantry. So we were happy to hear that they have opened up an amazing tasting room in conjunction with ELL, an eatery which produces wonderful organic and ethical meals. ELL specializes in designer pizzas, salads and creative dishes with fresh local ingredients.
We took a trip out there last weekend and were so impressed. The tasting room and eatery have been beautifully designed with a clean contemporary feel with stunning views out onto the vineyards and valley below as well as the Babylonstoren mountains in the distance. We thoroughly enjoyed a lazy lunch and wine tasting in their relaxed and inviting space.
There are some really special and unique spots in the Hemel & Aarde Valley, so I’d definitely recommend you visit and do some exploring!

We live in Hermanus and are always on the lookout for stylish and interesting places to take our visiting friends for lunch. We took friends this last weekend to eat at ELL at Spookfontein, all of them “Arty” visiting the Cape for Design Indaba. They were blown away by the modern simplistic architecture and the views across the valley. The food was beautifully presented and tasty. Will definitely be return visitors to Spookfontein

That’s great to hear Terry! I had 3 friends visiting from New york, Berlin and Gdansk and they too were very impressed.

Good morning
Yesterday we visited Ell for my birthday lunch celebration. Beautiful setting and location. Good service as well. Just a bit dissappointing in one respect, my fresh cob serving, seemed rather tiny for R135.00. It was served with a couple of fries and a salad. So not sure how the price is justified!?!? I did ask Norah, and she commented that it weighed 220gms. Still not convincing. Please note that this is constructive criticism! Otherwise we have no other complaints.
Many thanks, I enjoyed your blog.
Warm regards
Frances

Hi Frances
Thanks so much for your comment. As we know, restaurants have their good and bad days and it’s great to be able to reflect that here so that it’s not just a one sided viewpoint. I trust you still had a wonderful birthday celebration!

Good day!
I would like to find out about using your venue for a function for around 100 people in April 2015. It is my father’s 80th birthday
Could you please send me pricing for a 3 course dinner. Do you have overnight possibilities too?
Regards,
Anne
