There’s something magical about stepping into a garden that has been lovingly tended to and nurtured by dedicated hands and hearts. A garden, just like a home is very much an extension of the owner or guardian and I always enjoy seeing the different styles and unique characteristics. I’m drawn to wilder gardens, with areas of shade, established trees and old fashioned flowers, a natural stream or water feature is a bonus. Don’t give me a lawn or immaculately clipped hedges. You can imagine I met my match at many of the gardens in Greyton.
Greyton is a small village nestled at the foot of the Riviersonderend mountain range, and just under a two hour drive from Cape Town. This countryside gem is known for its charming atmosphere with picturesque houses, oak lined avenues and and scenic surroundings. The annual Greyton Rose and Garden Fair takes place over two weekends in mid-Spring where selected gardens of Greyton are open to the public. This is an amazing opportunity to explore a number of magnificent private gardens. If you are an appreciator of natural beauty, plants and gardens – do yourself a favour and add it to your weekend getaway list.
Keep an eye on the Greyton Tourism Events Calendar for the annual dates. I’ve also explored Swellendam and Elgin Open Gardens, both are well worth exploring! Noordhoek gardens and Prince Albert gardens look wonderful too.
It was such a joy wandering through the various Greyton gardens. My spirit kept on soaring as I encountered more and more beauty. At one point, I felt quite saturated as though I could not take in one more drop. I hope that my photographs offer you with a sense of peace too, enjoy!
