De Rust – a touch of Klein Karoo magic

De Rust – a touch of Klein Karoo magic

If you’re looking for a respite from the city and perhaps something a little quirky and offbeat, De Rust might just be your answer. This picturesque village is a short distance from Oudtshoorn and lies at the southern end of Meiringspoort, one of the most magnificent passes in South Africa.

De Rust epitomises Karoo charm and if you’re a fan of Victorian architecture, you’ll enjoy eyeing all of the beautiful houses with their decorative elements and intricate woodwork. The village is embraced by mountains all round and is tiny enough to wander on foot which is something I always enjoy. The shops and restaurants are all dotted along the main road and you can pick and choose your favourites.

I thoroughly appreciated the hospitality and warmth of the locals. I was spontaneously invited to join a small dinner party and got to enjoy a yoga class in the church hall. After a morning walk, I stopped for an early coffee and a scone and then discovered that my bank card wasn’t working, which is all I had on me. The owner of the restaurant graciously told me, “Not to worry, it’s on the house.” This is the kind of generosity that makes South African dorpies magic.

Be sure to drive through Meiringspoort and make a stop at the waterfall for an epic swim and if you’re looking for somewhere to stay that’s outside of the village, take a look at the beautiful Numbi Valley. De Rust is often seen as just a pitstop en-route however it really is worth considering a few nights stay.
