I’ve just returned from a wonderful getaway in the heart of the Klein Karoo where we discovered a real hidden gem. My friends and I embarked on our first road trip together and set off on Route 62 with Danielskraal Farm as our destination. It’s a beautiful drive with incredible scenery and plenty of great places to stop along the way for padkos and coffees.
Nearing Calitzdorp, we started noticing spekboom bushes in full bloom, filling the arid landscape with vivid pink and mauve hues, what a sight! The colour continued as we drove through the tiny town of Carlitzdorp, with magnificent bougainvilleas in flower and lush green vineyards contrasting against the seemingly barren earth. Just a short 10min drive later, along a dirt road, we suddenly emerged into a lush green oasis, our private paradise for the next four days.
Danielskraal farmhouse dates back to 1836 and still maintains its original character and charm with a thatched roof and the thickest walls – perfect for keeping the house cool on those hot summer days. The house has four bedrooms with a lounge, dining room, fully kitted kitchen, three bathrooms and the most glorious stoep. We literally lived on the stoep for most of our stay – with it’s plush sofas and uninterrupted views, can you blame us?
On arrival, the stoep dining table was beautifully decked and looked set for an alfresco feast. This was just an indication of the style and attention to detail that Danielskraal is all about, and an invitation to relax, enjoy the luxuries on offer and soak up the generous ambiance created by owner Rosheen.
Rosheen adds a stylish flair and flamboyance to everything she does and makes Karoo living look absolutely effortless. So much so, that one of her besties, Sandra, has decided to join her in this Karoo venture. Together they make an exceptional team and instantly made us feel like old friends.
We loved getting to know Rosheen and Sandra, hearing about their general farm antics and tribulations, meeting Juniper the drop dead gorgeous Bengal cat who rides with Rosheen on her quad bike and feeding Juno the rescued kid goat. Everything they do is a little out of the ordinary and they reminded us of the infamous duo, Patsy and Eddie of Absolutely Fabulous. In fact my friend Sam, has decided a biography is in order!
Thanks for a fantastic stay Rosheen and Sandra, we can’t wait to return!

THE AREA
Carlitzdorp may seem like a tiny one horse town but on closer inspection you’ll find it has its own charm and an array of interesting artists and entrepreneurs call this spot home. Rosheen took us on a whirlwind tour, past stunning heritage homes and introducing us to some of the fabulous locals.
A quick stop at the local hairdresser with its quirky retro style, then off to meet well known ceramist Hylton Nel and to take a peek into his studio and home, then lunch at De Krans Bistro and finally coffee and dessert at Penny’s Place, a lovely art gallery.
You can also take a day trip to Prince Albert or Oudtshoorn.
