Montagu is one of my favourite places in the Western Cape. This picturesque town is full of charming historical buildings and architectural gems which makes it a delight to wander through. It’s also small enough to navigate on foot or by bicycle. The town is embraced by magnificent mountains all around and is well known for its mountain climbing. Montagu also happens to be on the scenic Route 62 which is another must.
I’ve compiled a list of my favourite spots for you. This is by no means a comprehensive list of things to do and see, so be sure to pop Montagu into your GPS and come and explore for yourselves.
MONTAGU LOCAL is the place to go for fresh veggies and produce, delicious deli items and artisan goods. I always love stopping by in for a chat with owners Mari and Louise and to see and hear what’s new. Louise is one of the founders of Montagu Cheese which is of course stocked in the shop as well.
– 21 Bath Street, Montagu
New to Montagu is BLOMENBY, selling fresh cut flowers and a lovely curation of honey products and gifting goodies. This little gem is situated at The Barn.
– 60 Long Street, Montagu
THE BARN ON 62 is my favourite place for a breakfast or lunch. They have a beautiful and inviting interior with a fire on the go for those chilly days, and a lovely outdoor seating area. Their garden area is a real oasis on a hot day.
– 60 Long Street, Montagu
My other go-to for coffee is MOOI AT MAGGIE. Here you can enjoy a delicious Deluxe coffee in the sunshine on the verandah. You’ll also find a great selection of gift ideas and treats.
– 19 Church Street, Montagu
For the art lover, do make your way to IBIS GALLERY. You’ll find fine art paintings and drawings, original, hand crafted furniture and other wooden items – Shaker and Country inspired – hand-thrown earthenware pottery (terracotta and maiolica), hand made tiles, vintage oriental carpets and various other interesting crafted things.
There’s always something I want to take home with me.
– 16 Bath Street. Montagu
I’m always a fan of second hand book shops and THE MONTAGU BOOK SHOP is another quirky find. You’re invited to take a break in their reading room and enjoy one of their books, they even have a coffee and tea station for this purpose.
– 48 Bath Street, Montagu
FLYING FEET offers guided town tours and bicycle rentals. Their bicycles are Dutch-style, single speed, backpedal, well loved town bikes. Each of the bikes has been hand painted by a different local artist and is unique. Join for a guided tour of the town and get to really experience Montagu through the eyes of a passionate local.
WHERE TO STAY
There is a wealth of incredible guest houses, both in town and situated on surrounding farms. KOGMAN & KEISIE GUEST FARM ticks both boxes as it has all the farm and nature feels and it’s situated in the best part of town, right at the foot of the mountain. They have a gorgeous self catering cottage and five B&B suites. The love and passion of owners, Liana and Petrus, is evident throughout. This is also the home of FIJN BOTANICALS and their skincare and home products can be bought from the reception shop.
Another wonderful self-catering option is OLIVE STONE FARM.
