Of course staying in a boutique hotel is a wonderful treat but we generally tend to choose self-catering accommodation for weekends away. I love finding places situated in nature and that are slightly off the beaten track. Someone recommended Rusty Gate Farm to us and the mention of a large dam with kayaks and a foofie-slide did the trick! The farm is located in between Villiersdorp and Greyton which makes it a great destination for a quick Cape Town getaway.
After a long bumpy uphill on a dirt road, you’ll suddenly arrive in a breathtaking spot nestled on the mountain top. There are 5 cottages in a row so they’re not totally private but from your stoep you’re not too aware of the other cottages. This would be a great option for a group of friends as you could book 2 or 3 cottages.
The cottages are rustic and quite basic but all you need for a break from the city. I particularly loved the spaciousness of our cottage and the simple no-fuss feel. The double bed was actually 2 single beds pushed together and disguised with a sheet so that was a bit of a fail! There are walks to enjoy, hammocks to lie in, a games room, tiny plunge pool and three dams – need I say more?! Perfect for kids and nature lovers too.
