Last week I took a few days off and headed to The Place Guest Farm in the Klein Karoo. From Cape Town, it’s a long drive but the scenery along the way more than makes up for it and of course the destination itself. Situated in a secluded valley on the banks of the Touw River with endless views, The Place is really a magical discovery. The river only flows a few times a year creating lovely swimming holes and sandy beaches but at the moment it’s completely dry. This allowed me to explore the riverbed and admire the river stones and rocks and of course to collect a few beauties. I’ve always loved the rough beauty of the Karoo scrub and the dry landscape with its thorn trees and koppies so I felt right at home.
The Place has two self-catering cottages which are both beautifully put together. They have a rustic simplicity with modern touches and plenty of charm. My time at The Studio cottage was wonderful – with a brand new plunge pool for hot days and a hammock to while away the time, what more could you want for a relaxing stay? Don’t forget to order a loaf of freshly baked olive and rosemary bread!
