Ou Meul Bakkery

Ou Meul Bakkery, Cape Town

On Saturday I finally got round to visiting the Ou Meul Bakkery near the bottom end of Long Street for a quick breakfast. (For my international readers, the name means ‘old mill bakery’ in Afrikaans.) Anyone who has travelled  along the N2 through Riviersonderend will know the Ou Meul Bakkery and their famous homemade pies. We always used to make a pitstop there on long journeys and buy an assortment of mini pies. I remember the pie fillings being absolutely incredible and the pastry perfectly golden.

They have recently opened their second establishment in the heart of town which is good news for all of us Capetonians. I had a delicious cappuccino and lemon and poppy seed muffin but I’m looking forward to enjoying a pie on the next visit for sure. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the service is great, definitely a new fave spot!

So do I Will, love the unexpected pop of colour!

  3. The best chicken pies I’ve ever tasted are from Die Ou Meul in Riviersonderend. So much more accessible in Long Street – thanks for the info!
